London, June 5 (IANS) British actress Gemma Arterton says she always wanted to be a princess when she was a child.

‘I come from a simple background. My mum was a cleaner and my dad was a welder. But there was a time when I wanted to become a princess,’ femalefirst.co.uk quoted her as saying.

‘I probably read too many romantic novels. I always wanted to be rescued by a prince. But I wouldn’t have looked my best,’ she said.

The 24-year-old recently played Princess Tamina in ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘.

Rains in store for Delhi

June 5th, 2010 by V

New Delhi, June 5 (IANS) Delhiites can look forward to pleasant weather Saturday as met officials predicted partly cloudy skies, rain in some parts of the city and a dip in the maximum temperature.

‘The sky will be partly cloudy. There is a possibility of rain in some parts,’ said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The minimum temperature recorded in the morning was 28 degrees Celsius.

‘The temperature is down as the dust haze has become a barrier for the sunlight,’ the official said.

He added that the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 37 degrees. On Friday, the maximum temperature was 39 degrees.

‘The dip in temperature and the cool breeze is because of rain in some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir,’ the official said.

Indian-American teen wins Spelling Bee crown

June 5th, 2010 by V

Washington, June 5 (IANS) Spelling ‘juvia‘ and ‘stromuhr‘ correctly, Indian American Anamika Veeramani has won the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee crown to retain the honour for the ‘desis‘ for the third year in a row.

‘I’m really, really happy. This is one of the best moments of my life,’ said the 14-year-old from North Royalton, Ohio, who defeated another Indian American, Shantanu Srivatsa of West Fargo, North Dakota in the nationally televised final round Friday night to become the bee’s 83rd champion.

Her win earns a $30,000 cash prize and engraved trophy from the event’s sponsor, The E.W. Scripps Co., along with a $2,500 US savings bond and a complete reference library from Merriam-Webster, a $5,000 scholarship from the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation and a package from Encyclopaedia Britannica totalling $3,499.

Friday’s final rounds began with 10 contestants, who were eliminated one by one by words such as ochidore, a shore crab, and terribilita, a term applied typically to the art of Michelangelo describing the power and grandeur of his work.

Veeramani, who finished fifth in last year’s bee, also survived a marathon four-and-half hour semi-final round earlier Friday that contained a little bit of controversy.

It started when another early favourite, Neetu Chandak, 14, of Seneca Falls, New York who finished eighth last year, appeared to stumble over ‘paravane’, an underwater glider device, in the fifth round.

But the judges reversed the decision eliminating her, blaming the ‘ambiguous nature of the answers’ when she asked about a root word. But given a second chance in the sixth round, she misspelled ‘apogalacteum’, the point at which a celestial body is furthest away from the Milky Way.

For the most part, this year’s spellers proved to be intrepid. The semi-finals were supposed to last three hours covering two rounds. But the contest was extended to a sixth round because too many spellers — 19 — were still on board to qualify for the finals, usually limited to 15 or less.

With NBA star Shaquille O’Neal on hand watching, the sixth round proved brutal. Nine of the first 13 were knocked out, leaving only 10. Judges cancelled the remainder of the sixth round to provide 10 finalists for the evening competition, though a fortunate six had not spelled a word in the round.

The contest began Thursday with 273 spellers ranging in age from 8 to 15, some from as far away as China and New Zealand. They included eight-year-old Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, the youngest sister of last year’s champion, Kavya Shivashankar.

Kavya too had her own moment of glory when President Barack Obama met her in the Oval Office Thursday and congratulated Kavya on her extraordinary achievement and reiterated the importance of a top-flight education for success in the 21st century economy.

‘Bioprinter’ to create human organs

June 4th, 2010 by V

London, June 5 (IANS) There’s good news for patients who need an organ transplant with scientists developing a new machine that can weave human organs with fragments of tissues.

Researchers at a US-based regenerative medicine firm have already developed a prototype machine capable of growing arteries. They claim the doctors could one day be able to ‘print‘ new organs for transplant.

They said the new method, based on 3D laser printing technology, could be used to create body parts. Instead of combining layers of plastic and metal, the ‘bioprinter‘ puts living tissue together, The Telegraph reported.

Two laser-based printing heads are used to place living cells onto thin sheets of gel with microscopic precision. Multiple layers are then laid on top of each other in a specially designed mould, or ‘scaffold’ and the cells begin to fuse together.

‘Ultimately the idea would be for surgeons to have tissue on demand for various uses,’ said Keith Murphy, chief executive of the California-based company Organovo.

‘The best way to do that is get a number of bioprinters into the hands of researchers and give them the ability to make three dimensional tissues on demand.’

IIFA in Colombo to spread peace, support it: Anupam Kher

Anupam Kher

Colombo, June 5 (IANS) Several big stars are missing from the IIFA awards this year after the boycott call from the southern film industry, but veteran Anupam Kher says the event is an effort to spread peace in the island country and should be supported.

‘To heal wounds it is important to keep them open. What happened that time (in Sri Lanka), every one is sad about that. But if an effort is being made to spread peace and happiness through something (like the IIFA awards), then that should be supported. I hope people recognise (that) and not create any controversies,’ Anupam told IANS.

The actor was Friday honoured with the Presidential Award by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa here.

A statement issued by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce had stated that southern stars and filmmakers would boycott all Bollywood stars who attend the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) event in the Sri Lankan capital.

They have been campaigning against the Sri Lankan government and the alleged killing of civilian Tamils at the height of the conflict between the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil Tigers last year.

Anupam is not new to conflict situations.

The Kashmir-born actor had fled the valley in the early 1990s when Muslim militancy peaked. He returned to his home state many years later to shoot for the 2008 movie ‘Tahaan‘. He is now filming in the valley for Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Lamhaa’, where he is cast as a Muslim leader.

Was he scared going back to his home town that is suffering from militancy?

‘Yes, I was scared before going to Kashmir to shoot. But being a celebrity I got adequate security and protection. We shot under heavy police and army protection. I felt better,’ said Anupam, 55.

Asked whether it was only the Kashmir factor that convinced him to take up the role, he said: ‘Apart from the fact the film is on Kashmir and I got a chance to go back to the place, the film also had a good story, a good star cast and a good director. As an actor it is important to do films you relate to.’

Up next is also ‘Hitler’, where he plays the title role. It’s a first for the versatile actor, who has played every kind of role in his two-decade career, but gets his first historical character only now with debutant director Rakesh Ranjan’s film.

‘I’m very happy about my role as Hitler in the film, which is called ‘Hitler’. We will start shooting in August. I’m quite excited because for the first time I will be playing a historical character on the big screen.’

This is, of course, not the first time Anupam will be seen in a role with grey shades.

After starting his career with critically acclaimed film ‘Saransh’, he became a household name with the evil Dr. Dang in ‘Karma’ (1986), the wicked uncle Tribhuvan in ‘ChaalBaaz’ (1989), the greedy father Shyamlal in ‘Tezaab’ (1988), the miser Hazari Prasad in ‘Dil’ (1990), the corrupt businessman in ‘Rang De Basanti’… The list is long.

In a career spanning an enviable range of characters, nuanced and also in-your-face, Anupam also made his mark as the loyal friend in ‘Lamhe’ (1991) and the funny guy in ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1992).

In recent times, he has been appreciated in critically acclaimed films like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’ and ‘Morning Walk’.

Apart from ‘Hitler’ and ‘Lamhaa’, the actor is looking forward to Pankaj Kapoor’s directorial debut ‘Mausam’ that has Shahid Kapoor in the male lead.

‘I will start shooting for Pankaj Kapoor’s ‘Mausam’ in Scotland after 10 days. I’m quite excited about my role in the film,’ he said, without giving out details about his role.

Anupam also keeps busy with his acting academy, Actor Prepares, and theatre.
