New Delhi, Nov 19: Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country’s largest carmaker, which has been struggling to keep its sales momentum, is all set to launch its compact car A-Star to beat the year-end blues.

The car industry, which witnessed a decline of 6.59 per cent in October, struggles to sell car in the year-end as most customers postpone purchases for a new model year. MSI is hoping that the novelty factor associated with its 5th global model will help in overcoming the challenge.

“November and December are usually tough months for car makers. Knowing that very well, we will be launching the A-Star so that it can bring excitement to the market,” MSI Executive Officer Marketing and Sales Mayank Pareek said.

“There have also been instances of customers coming to see new models and ending up purchasing existing models. A-Star might as well be that bait,” he added.

The A-Star will be the latest in a series of global models that Suzuki, MSI’s Japanese parent, has launched over the past few years and will be manufactured solely in India.

Manufactured at its Manesar plant, the company is aiming to sell about 50,000 units in the Indian market and one lakh units to be exported.

MSI claims that according to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the A-Star delivers a mileage of 19.59 km per litre. It is powered by the company’s new KB10 998 cc petrol engine and will be rolled out in three variants.

The expected price of this car is Rs. 3.85 lakhs.

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) – Japanese carmaker Toyota’s Indian unit Toyota Kirloskar will recall 20,000 of its multi-utility vehicle Innova in India, which were manufactured between April and October 2007, to repair a faulty part that could lead to oil leakages, The Financial Express reported, citing the company.

Toyota (nyse: TM – news – people ) Kirloskar Motor’s deputy managing director KK Swamy was quoted as saying: ‘We found there was a small problem in the rear axle of about 20 vehicles that came to us for servicing.’

The report said the problem, detected in about 20,000 Innovas, comprising 15 pct of the vehicles sold, is in the differential carrier mounting nuts, which may loosen and cause oil to leak.

The report quoted the company as saying it is experiencing this problem only in India, and that it might have occurred because of India’s road conditions.

January 10th, 2008 by V

Tata Motors has launched the people’s car – ‘Tata Nano.’ The car will be available in several variants. Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Group said that the car would be manufactured at the Singur plant later this year. He informed that the standard Nano would be priced at Rs 1 lakh for dealers (excluding VAT).

Earlier, he had said that they may not be able to hold the price that they have emotionally held on to, reports CNBC-TV18.

The commercial launch of the ‘people’s car’ will be in H2CY08, he informed. People’s car will be 20% shorter than Maruti 800 but will have 20% greater internal volume.

He also said that it was too premature to talk of EBITDA margin of the small car. But they will offer a wide variety of variants with several upmarket options. Tata has been approached by two countries to launch the ‘People’s Car’ and they may be looking at Africa and Latin America and South East Asia to launch the car.

The company will not sacrifice profits and there is a strong business case for the small car.

So far, they have invested Rs 1,500-1,700 crore in the small car project. The car will comply with Bharat III & Euro 4 emission norms. He said that the car meets all safety standards including crash test, offset and side crash.
