Tum Mile Movie Review

Tum Mile: A predictable bore

Rating: 2 out of 5*

Starring: Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan, Sachin Khedekar and RJ Mantra

Director: Kunal Deshmukh

Ali Taha (Emraan) meets Sanjana (Soha) on board of their flight to Mumbai from Cape Town. Here on the film proceeds on and back and forth narrative revealing them being ex-lovers. Six years back then Ali was a art student and had lost his heart to the activist Sanjana. They both had progressed to a live in relationship in quick time as well. But monetary issues leading to ego clashes had broken their relationship apart. After arriving in Mumbai on the ill fated day of 26th July 2005, they go onto encounter the biggest floods in the history of Mumbai. The rest of the film is about the couple battling for their lives after being stuck in the rain and floods. In their struggle for survival, they learn more about each other and things which they had not known in all those years of being together.

Emraan is only getting better with each passing film and in here as well he is very impressive. Soha Ali Khan delivers her best performance till date going through a gamut of expressions with amazing ease. Amongst the rest cast the only one to leave a mark is debutant RJ Mantra. He is very good playing Emraan’s buddy.

Kunal Deshmukh’s shows technical department improvement after his debut film Jannat. His treatment of the love story though somewhat predictable is good as well. But we most often keep sensing that the flood situation things which appear more thrilling have completely deliberately taken a back seat with the flash back and romance between the lead pair taking more prominence. This all leads to the film being boring at many places. There was a recent news item that Mahesh Bhatt cut short the flood shots to give more importance to the romantic track. Well not a wise decision we may say. The stock footage of the floods and the computer graphics are a let down at many places but the one thing that doesn’t dissappoint is the film’s music. Pritam deserves full marks for his consistency in delivery great music which is already ruling the charts along with his score for last Friday’s release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Camerawork by Prakash Kutty is very good. The effort gone in recreating the flood situation is commendable as well.

Tum Mile is more of a romantic film with the natural disaster backdrop added for effect. If you are going in expecting India’s first disaster movie then you will be in for a major disillusionment. So choose it at your own preference.

Movie Review : London Dreams (2009)

London Dreams: Salman – Ajay rock!

Rating: 3 out of 5*

Starring: Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin and Om Puri

Director: Vipul Amrutlal Shah

Arjun (Ajay) and Manu (Salman) are childhood buddies living in a Punjab village. Arjun passionately loves music and dreams of becoming a musical sensation like Michael Jackson and perform at London’s Wembley Stadium but his family hates music as it was the reason for his grand father’s death. But as after his father’s death, Arjun’s uncle (Om Puri) brings him along with him to London, he runs away to pursue his dream. Mannu grows up in the village turning out to be a good for nothing bloke who makes money by playing his band at marriage ceremonies. Meanwhile Arjun chases his dream and forms a band with two Pakistani brothers (VJ’s Aditya and Ranvijay) and Priya (Asin). When he realizes he is getting attracted to Priya he decides to hide his feelings and focus on music and only reveal to them when he fulfills his dream. He gets Mannu to London to join his band. But that he realizes turns out to be his biggest mistake. The naturally talented Mannu scores over Arjun in every department unintentionally and goes on to become a bigger sensation that a dedicated and hardworking Arjun. Jealousy starts creeping in for Arjun but the final nail in the coffin comes when he sees even Priya falling in love with Mannu. What sinister plan Arjun throws on an unsuspecting Mannu to destroy his musical career and what it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

Vipul Amrutlal Shah has delivered his technically best product till date with London Dreams. But apart from the technique its high on emotions as well. Vipul gives apt time for character development for each of his main protagonists. Devoid of unnecessary melodrama he captures the emotional moments with aplomb. Sejal Shah’s camerawork is of international standards. The night scenes are superbly lit.

Amongst the flaws, the climax is overstretched and the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music not really up to the mark, especially the climax concert numbers. The song that comes after everything is over is too slow and a rousing number would have made for an apt grand finale.

Ajay is excellent in his part and one can see the best villain awards coming his way at the awards for this year. Salman seems to be enjoying himself and is extremely likeable. Though Asin is most of the time relegated to the background she puts up a nice act. Her chemistry with Salman works. Popular VJs Aditya and Ranvijay of Roadies fame make a good debut. Om Puri in a small part impresses as usual.

This film was originally planned over a decade back to be made by Rajkumar Santoshi with SRK and Aamir. Well, it may not star them now but makes for an excellent musical journey worth an experience in the big cinema hall.

What To Expect From Shashi Preetam?

A Hindi Telugu bilingual is in the making and the film is called Kitkit+Cricket=Kikut. Oh my God! Who ever suggested this name to the music director turned director, Shashi Preetam should reconsider it, say folks.

Now, the film which is likely to release this summer has a concoction of Hindi and Telugu stars. Based on a long list of veteran actors, one could look forward to some serious acting. Names like Kota, Johny leaver and Tanikella Bharani are all associated with the movie. It depends on how Shashi Preetam uses them.

The glamour quotient is brought about by Sayali Bhagath, and based on her previous performances she could be hot to handle. Jakie Shroff brings in the hero angle, though over the bridge at 50+ he looks handsome.

If Shashi Preetam has a good subject to direct, he may just provide us with some entertainment through this unique experiment.

Sharukh Khan Vs Akshay Kumar

It is now estimated that Shah Rukh Khan is worth about 2500cr. His is the highest worth and is much higher than the second in the list Akshay Kumar who is worth about 1800cr.

Despite having tremendous star power and fan following Amir Khan and Salman Khan could not compete with Shah Rukh and Akshay. This just goes to prove once again that Shah Rukh is the king and Akshay is the king in making.

The reason why Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are in a league of their own is that, they are the hottest selling stars outside of India. A Shah Rukh Khan or Akshay Kumar film is a big draw in the international circuit. This was the monopoly of Shah Rukh for quite sometime, till films like Namaste London, Welcome and Singh Is King from the Akshay stable also started doing well.

All in all, the race to the finish is between Shah Rukh and Akshay.

Govinda resumed shooting for Jagmohan Mundhra

January 6th, 2009 by pandu

Putting an end to all the speculation over the future of “Naughty At 40″, actor Govinda resumed shooting for director Jagmohan Mundhra’s movie this week.

“It was never Govinda’s fault that the shooting had halted. We had some production problems which have now been sorted out. Govinda has never been troublesome. For a 3pm shift he arrives at 2.30pm,” Mundhra said.

He said it is time the industry realised that they are in the throes of a recession. “Actors within the industry have realised it and are working accordingly. There are reports of how Govinda has been troubling my project ‘Naughty At 40′. But the truth is that the project being in trouble has nothing to do with Govinda. On the contrary, he has been unfailingly disciplined and punctual.”

The shooting is now taking place in Punjab.

“We shoot for 25 days and the film will be done. The days of stretching a film and its budget are over. Stars now need to cut their prices and give their dates at a stretch. It’s the only way to work.”

Katrina and Ranbir-The hottest couple of 2009

January 4th, 2009 by pandu

If all goes well Katrina and Ranbir might be the hottest on screen couple of 2009.

They will be seen together in not one but two films – Raj Kumar Santoshi’s “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” and Prakash Jha’s “Rajniti”.

The actors bonded well on the sets, and it seems they find each other’s company extremely comfortable.

Recently, a publication in India even took them out on a date and you bet they bonded like the best of pals.

However, when Katrina first learned she’d be working with Ranbir, her reaction was that he is too thin and he must put on weight. Not surprising, considering Katrina has by now worked with most of the hunks in Bollywood.

Mr. Bachchan has done on the strength of his talent alone: Aamir

January 4th, 2009 by pandu

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan may have a mutual admiration society and both may bond with each other superbly, but as a child the “Ghajini” star never thought that Big B would make it to the top.

Aamir, who is riding on the success of his latest film “Ghajini,” made this disclosure at the unveiling of the latest book on the megastar titled “Bachchanalia” in Mumbai on Saturday (January 3) evening.

Aamir said that since he was born into a family of filmmakers, talks at home were mostly about films and film stars of those days.

“So, we kids at home would also discuss films and even our housemaids would put in their ‘knowledgeable’ remarks,” he said.

He recalled that in 1970 Filmfare magazine had devoted an entire page on those who were struggling to make it big in films and had their photographs.

“We all huddled over it, and from their looks in the photographs, we tried to predict who could make the grade in films and who would not. While pouring over the photographs, when we came to the one with an emaciated face, we kids and our housemaids had a hearty laugh and I mocked at the photograph, saying “Inko dekho. Ye bhi star banana chahata hai!” (Look at him. He also wants to be a star!),” Aamir said and continued coyly: “And that unlikely hopeful was Mr. Bachchan.”

His revelation evoked a roar of laughter from the gathering. Amitabh, who was sitting besides his wife Jaya, son Abhishek, daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, laughed the loudest.

Aamir said that Amitabh could reach the superstardom by dint of his sheer talent alone and he deserved every bit of his success.

“In the film industry today, there are a number of success stories, but most of them are fake. We are yet to see anybody in the industry scaling the height as Mr. Bachchan has done on the strength of his talent alone. Perhaps, nobody will,” he said.

“Bachchanalia”, the pictorial book, with accompanying text, covers the almost four-decade-long journey of Big B as an actor. Written by journalist Bhawna Somaiya, the book has been published by Osian. It was released at Tata Theatre in the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai.
