What is the Global History and Geography Regents?

After the two-year Global History and Geography course in New York State, there is an exam, which is often called the Global Regents examination. All 10th grade students are required to take the Global Regents exam if they want to receive a NYS Regents diploma.

When do I take the Global Regents exam?

Generally, the Global Regents exam is given at the end of 10th grade and is administered in January, June and August of each year.

How is the Global Regents exam set up?

The Global Regents exam is divided into three parts with a three-hour time limit to complete.

Part I – 50 standard multiple-choice questions with four answer choices. A separate answer sheet for Part I is provided and should be located at the back of the question booklet.

Part II – One thematic essay question. This essay must be well organized, include an introduction, several paragraphs addressing a given task, and a conclusion.

Part III A – Eight short answer questions, each accompanied by a document. You are required to answer all of the questions using the information supplied in the matching document.

Part III B – Document Based Essay. You are required to write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs addressing a given task, and a conclusion, using evidence from at least four of the accompanying documents to support your response.

What do I need to bring to the test?

Not many materials or tools are needed for the Global Regents exam. You should have at least two blue or black ink pens to write your answers.

How is the Global Regents exam scored?

Both the thematic essay and document-based question essay are accompanied by a scoring rubric that explains how each will be graded. The weight of each part is as follows:

What topics are covered on the Global Regents exam?

The underlying theme of Global History and Geography is the importance of geography in studying a society as well as the fact that the world has been coming closer together since the 13th century. The exam is designed to reflect the five social studies standards that are: U.S. History, World History, Geography, Economics, Civics, Citizenship and Government. The two-year Global History course is specifically divided as follows:

Unit 1: Ancient World (400 B.C. to 500 A.D.) – A study of the Ancient Civilizations of Asia, Africa and Europe.
Unit 2: Expanding Zones of Exchange and Encounter (500 to 1200) – A study of how different regions of the world encountered and exchanged ideas with each other from the Gupta Empire to the Crusades.
Unit 3: Global Interaction (1200 to 1650) – A study of how the interaction of the Japanese, Mongol and African Civilizations and the spirit of the Renaissance led to the exchange of ideas, trade and changes in society.
Unit 4: The First Global Age (1450 to 1750) – A study of how the encounter among the Ming, Ottoman, Spanish, Portuguese and Mesoamerican empires led to changes in the world.
Unit 5: Age of Revolution (1750 to 1914) – A study of how the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, political revolution, nationalism, industrialism and imperialism influenced the world.
Unit 6: Half Century of Crisis and Achievement – A study of how World War I, the Russian Revolution, rise of dictatorship in Europe, the rise of nationalism in Asia and the Middle East and World War II affected the world.
Unit 7: The 20th Century Since 1845 – A study of the political, economical and social changes that influenced Europe, Asia, Latin America, the United States and the Middle East.
Unit 8: Global Connections and Interactions: A study of how overpopulation, urbanization, globalization, ethnic rivalry and other economic and political issues are influencing the world.
