Kuselan Movie Review
Starring: Rajini, Pasupathy, Nayanthara, Meena, Sona, Vadivelu, Vijayakumar
Direction: P Vasu
Music: G V Prakash
Production: K Balachander
Kuselan is 2 hours, 30 minutes long.
Rajinikanth appears twenty minutes after the movie begins.
And remains through the length of the film, though not in every single frame.
In all he appears for a total of 60 minutes.
And in 3 rocking songs.
Kuselan is a fun filled 2 hours, 10 minutes with about 20 minutes given over to emotional drama.
There are no real fight sequences, only the ones staged for this movie within a movie.
It has two parallel stories about two friends – one rich, one poor.
The highlight of Kuselan: 6 punch dialogue sequence filled with comedy that will delight not just fans of Thalaivar but everyone in the audience.
Rajini usually has one stand-out line in every movie -here he takes that old saying, “Matha Pitha Guru Dheivam” and turns it into a new saying about the importance of freindship: “Matha Pitha Guru Nanban Dheivam”. We can bet that this is going to be a catchy line that all of us will be repeating soon.
For many of us who have been wondering a lot about Rajini’s political ambitions and his sojourns into the Himalayas, he answers us all in Kuselan with such wit and tact that it will silence us from speculating anymore!
As in Chandramuki, where the Superstar gave equal screen presence to Prabhu, Vadivelu and Joythika, here, in Kuselan, he has given importance to other actors sharing the screen with him.
Kuselan
The climax, with Pasupathy and Rajini, is sure to melt hearts!
Pasupathy is marvelous; perhaps his best performance to date.
Comedy by Vadivelu is top-notch, rivaling his performance in Chandramukhi.
Nayantara simply sizzles effortlessly, proving why she is the numero uno.
Arivind Krishna’s camera work is prefect, matching the mood of the movie .
This is a Thalaivar movie, and yet it is also something completely different!
Thalaivar’s style here as he plays himself reaches a new high.
You are in for a sumptuous Rajini treat.
IndiaGlitz Review:
How many times have you walked out of a theatre emotionally choked up after watching a Rajinikanth film? How many times have you seen Rajinikanth not uttering a punch dialogue in his films? How many times have you not seen Rajinikanth flexing his muscles and bashing the baddies in his movie?
Watch ‘Kuselan’, where one can find a completely different Rajinikanth – the real Rajinikanth, the human being. The movie is perhaps an answer to his critics who have been criticizing the actor for doing routine ‘commercial masalas’. Thanks to P Vasu, Rajinikanth reinvents himself bringing out the actor within him through this film. One thing is very clear. He has not acted to commercial compulsions.
The movie throws light on the real Rajinikanth, who has been quite a puzzle with millions of his fans. And the star himself answers questions that have been plaguing the minds of millions of his fans. Want to know the answers to why Rajini has not entered politics? Why the superstar often goes to the Himalayas? Why the actor still prefers to work in run-of-the-mill stuff?

‘Kuselan’ has got all the answers. With Rajinikanth by his side, P Vasu has come out with a message that is quite though provoking. The usual adage is ‘Matha Pitha Guru Deivam’. With ‘Kuselan’ the adage gets an addition – ‘Matha Pitha Guru Nanban Deivam’.
He plays the ‘Super Star’ himself and does not at any time impose himself on screen. Watching Rajinikanth play the role with consummate ease is like watching Sachin Tendulkar on song at the middle of the crease. It’s like listening to Beethoven’s symphony sitting under the moonlight. Though the story doesn’t revolve around Rajinikanth, he manages to leave his indelible presence on screen. Especially towards the climax, an emotional Rajinikanth identifies his friend recalling their good old innocent days. These are sequences that evoke tears to our eyes bring the human side of each of us to the forefront.
It is a tough task for an actor like Pasupathy to carry the entire burden on his shoulders acting alongside a scene stealer like Rajinikanth. As a poor barber, fighting for survival, he evokes all the sympathy. Seemingly an extension of his role in ‘Veyyil’, Pasupathy passes out with flying colors. Hats off to him!
Meena as his caring wife is more of a realistic portrayal. She understands the emotional struggles of her husband and gives him the much needed solace and comfort. She sure manages to get under the skin of her character and has done an extremely good job.

Nayanthara plays herself in the film and executes the job entrusted to her quite well. She plays a heroine in films, who shoots for a movie alongside Rajinikanth. She fulfills the glamour quotient and serves the purpose indeed well. Vadivelu’s comedy compliments the script well. His trick to get an audition with Rajinikanth, who is shooting in the village brings down the roof with laughter.
The movie boasts of a huge star cast including Livingston, M S Baskar, Sona, Geetha, Fathima Babu, Brahmanandham, Chinni Jayanth. All have significant parts to play in the film.
Prabhu plays a cameo while a host of stars including Sneha, Soundarya Rajinikanth, Suriya among others appear for the ‘Cinema Cinema’ song.

Kuselan is about two childhood friends, with one becoming the Numero Uno in the film industry, while the other lands up as a barber in a hamlet.
Balakrishnan alias Bala (Pasupathy) is a poor barber in a village. He leads a happy life with his wife Sreedevi (Meena) and his children, until a film crew lands in their village to shoot for a movie. Coming to know that Super Star Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) has come for shooting in the village, and also with the understanding that he is Bala’s childhood friend, villagers flock to Bala’s house with favors. A man with tremendous self dignity, Bala fears to meet Ashok Kumar thinking that he may not identify him. But, when the two meet after a long gap, the emotional drama between the pals, sets up an emotional 20-minute climax.
Complimenting Vasu’s hard work are Arvindh Krishna’s excellent cinematography and the brilliant musical score by G V Prakash Kumar. The catchy numbers ‘Om zarerare’ and ‘Cinema Cinema’ have especially been captured in an attractive manner by Aravindh Krishna. The background score towards the climax sets up the momentum.
Hats off to director P Vasu! The film-maker, who knows the knack of remaking a Malayalam hit in Tamil, has rendered a movie that has the right packaging of emotions. He has intelligently packaged the movie with commercial elements that a hardcore Rajinikanth fan would love without spoiling the crux.
Produced by Pushpa Kandaswamy and Vijayakumar, ‘Kuselan’ is a movie that would go down well with Rajinikanth fans and this is a great opportunity to see the real side of this spectacular actor though on celluloid.
I am die hard fan of Rajnikanth, I have seen Sivaji 40 times.
But i am very disappointed after seeing Kuselan.
Its a big flop of the year.
Its a waste of time and money.
I think rajni should take retirement and should spent time with his grand children instead of acting with his
grand children.
I feel sorry to all my tamil mates.
The movie is a blockbuster like chandramukhi rajini has give his best in the movie. Unwanted anti rajini people will always give wrong comments in the name of rajini fan (disguise
Its a big waste of time and money. The production team forgot to write a story for the movie.
I am a big Thala fan but the movie was a complete let down. The film has no story and is an absolute waste of money and effort gone into thin air. Very poor direction. Sub-standard film.
Venkant and Harry are the same fools in the disguise of Rajini fans. Stop wasting your time on your worthless post. Just leave it to youselves. You are a disgrace. Please away…
Kuselan is one of the greatest Movie of super star. well done.
P vasu should learn to direct such movies without the commercial and cheap aspect. Vadivel should play down a bit and he is becoming louder like Gaundamani.
25 marks to Rajni. 25 marks to Livingsten, 15 marks to vadivel, 15 marks to Pasupathy and 20 marks to Chinnijayant.
P. Vasu is the worst director. The screenplay of the movie is such a crap. He is useless. Thalaivar is so smart and handsome. He has given the best in all the scenes he appeared. But except Thalaivar’s scenes, the movie is a waste one. P. Vasu is the only guy to be blamed. He does not even have to think of a story. A very good story line has already been given to him. Cannot he even do a better screenplay for that????? Such an idiot to spoil thalaivar’s image. But super star has worked on this for the commitment he had to KB. The last 20 mins only the movie all about.
regrads,.
THe movie is very good and excellent. The person should watch it twice then the movie is good that waht i felt.Attention first time viewers will have expectations and might be dissappointed but if u see the movie second time its really excellent.
Screen play is very poor and Vadivelu comedy not on the expected lines he should concentrate more on his body language rather than shouting. the only good thing abt the movie is the Climax, ( Superbly done my Rajni). the movie would have been a big hit if Vasu would have concentrated on the screenplay. Vasu is not good enough.
hi
i am rajini fan…. this film not good ….. because vasu…. i saw dasavatharam super super super film …… it gives more more respect in the world….. because kamal sir acting superb…..
please thalava changea way …. see your friend kamal he is a gen like you….. plese dont waste your time acting this type of movie…. now i like kamal sir also……….. money come and go …… but fans always …….
rajni has been made a mockery in this film by vasu.the film is complete wate and lets go for dasavatharam the second time.
I am a hardcore movie fan of superstar but not a follower…if he gives movies like this, he will lose many of his movie fans. The last two movies of superstar are not worthwatching. Sivaji is some-how ok because we can view atleast the technology and superb songs/dance. Sivaji was made as a super-hit only by innovative marketing techniques and not by the quality of the movie. Superstar has to sit and think now to rock again with another Chandramukhi. Look at the opposite house where Kamal has excelled in Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu and now in Dasavadaram. Our superstar has attracted many new fans through his Batcha film in which people were stunned with his performance and the screenplay. That is what happened in Kamals Dasavadaram where people are getting full involvement into the film and not even stand-up till THE END card is appearing on the screen. Superstar has to announce his next film immtly to rock the screen again.
I blame the director P. Vasu for making such a worst flim., what makes this movie as flop.
By luck Chandramuki went well for him
1. No characterization for Superstar. (he just meets his poor friend.. )
2. It was really boring to see Rajini Songs / Chandramuki-II .. nonsense. Main reason they didnt gel with movie.
3. No scripting work done …
RAJINI sir… please think before you take such flims.. I paid 45$ to watch this movie on first day – first show with family.. every one disappointed….
For sure, I will see RAJINI-Shanker moive ROBOT.. Shanker is a hardworker… so definately the next will also be as good as Sivaji. (or better than that)
Rajini sir, please cut relationship with Vasu. Enough funny flims.
Anbudan,
Rajini Fan.
Its not Rajni’s fault. It was P.Vasu’s fault. He just wanted Rajni in his film, thats all. He convinced Rajni by making him watch the original film. Then they sold the film for a higher price. They should of used someone else instead of Rajni as this was classed as a Rajni film with only Rajni doing 20 minutes of the film. This film is not even really about superstar. Rajni should do films with directors such as S.Shankar, Prabhu Deva. And P.Vasu should move to T.R.Rajanders aka Karadi’s house.
sri vishnu
