Beyonce donates £4m to drug rehabilitation centres across US

London, Jan 4 (ANI): Beyonce Knowles has donated her entire 4 million dollar salary from her new movie ‘Cadillac Records’ to a string of drug rehabilitation centres across U.S.

The move came after the singer spent two weeks with hardcore junkies to research for her latest role of singer Etta James, whose early career was blighted by heroin addiction, reports the Daily Star.

Knowles visited New York”s Phoenix House for the research and was moved to tears as she watched down-at-heel drug abusers go through detox misery after hitting rock bottom at the Phoenix House centre in Brooklyn, New York.

She was so moved by the work of Phoenix House staff – who treat 5,000 addicts a day in the US – that she pledged every penny of her pay cheque to helping them.

Karen Sodomick, marketing chief of the Phoenix House chain, confirmed Beyonce had given the ‘overwhelmingly generous’ gift.

However, she said: “Beyoncé wants to remain a quiet supporter.”

Singer-actress Beyonce Knowles has bagged the number one spot on two of Billboard’s song charts.

Knowles hit ‘Single Ladies’ outshone the competition on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R+B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, in its third and sixth week respectively, a website reported.

Rapper TI held his spot on the Hot 100 at number two with his track ‘Live Your Life’, featuring Rihanna, while Lady GaGa’s ‘Just Dance’ remains at number three.

Rounding out the top five is Britney Spears, who continues her comeback with ‘Womanizer’, rising from number six to the fifth spot this week.

Teen singer Taylor Swift’s latest album ‘Fearless’ has topped music sales in the week leading up to Christmas.

The young country pop musician’s second album was released on November 11, 2008 and its lead-off single ‘Love Story’ has become her highest Hot 100 hit.

Her album has sold 330,000 copies putting her in the No 1 spot for a third non-consecutive week on the Billboard charts, reports a newspaper.

According to Nielsen Soundscan, despite the staggering number, the overall music sales had still dipped to a 33 percent decrease as compared to last year, reports a magazine.

Other albums in soaring demand included Keysha Cole’s ‘Different Me’ which sold 322,000 copies, as compared to 265,000 copies of Jamie Foxx’s ‘Intuition’.

Britney spears’ ‘Circus’ and Beyonce Knowles’ “I Am … Sasha Fierce” sold 196,000 and 195,000 copies respectively.
