Crime student held for three prostitutes’ murder in Britain

May 27th, 2010 by V

London, May 27 (IANS) A student of criminology who told a neighbour that he was ‘doing a PhD in murder and Jack the Ripper’ was being quizzed for the brutal killing of three prostitutes in Britain.

The man was arrested from his home a red light area where a woman’s head inside a rucksack was understood to have been found. Hours later, a woman’s body parts were discovered in River Aire in Shipley, West Yorks, Daily Express reported Thursday.

The 40-year-old was being questioned regarding the three prostitutes from Bradford, West Yorkshire who are missing since June last year and feared dead.

A recent killing is believed to have been caught on CCTV cameras installed to help protect prostitutes. The sex workers were worried that they were being stalked by an attacker they named ‘Yorkshire Ripper II‘.

This case was strikingly similar to that of Peter Sutcliffe’s killing spree that left women across the north of England prisoners in their homes between 1975 and 1980. He mutilated the bodies of his victims using a hammer, sharpened screwdriver and a knife. He was caught and sentenced to 20 life sentences in 1981.

On Monday, the student was arrested in connection with the disappearances of Shelley Armitage, 31, and Suzanne Blamires, 36, who went within the past month. He was also being questioned regarding Susan Rushworth, 43, who vanished last June.

All three worked in Bradford’s red light district which Ripper Peter Sutcliffe trawled for three of his 13 victims in the 1970s.

The arrested man had told a neighbour he was studying at university and ‘doing a PhD in murder and Jack the Ripper’. He holds a degree in psychology and had written extensively on the internet about some of history’s most notorious mass murderers. On a website, the suspect called himself a ‘misanthrope who bought hate into heaven’.

‘As he (the suspect) was taken away he had his usual, blank, cold expression on his face. There was no surprise, shock or emotion. The only thing he was bothered about was the police locking his door properly,’ a neighbour was quoted as saying.

The neighbour said the man had a number of locks on his door and described it as ‘Fort Knox’.

Two of three other women being linked to the case are Bradford prostitutes who went missing in 1992 and 2001.

Yvonne Fitt, 33 was stabbed to death about two months before her corpse was found in 2002 in woods. Rebecca ‘Becky’ Hall, 19, was found dead in an alleyway in April 1992. She died from severe head injuries sustained in a vicious beating.

The third woman, 26-year-old Gemma Simpson, was not believed to have been a prostitute. She disappeared from her Leeds home in 2000.

West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Constable Jawaid Akhtar said: ‘This is a very thorough and painstaking inquiry into three missing people who are sex workers, with all the necessary resources and expertise devoted to it. The families of Suzanne, Shelley and Susan are all being supported by our family liaison officers.

Battle for Beckham intensifies

February 7th, 2009 by V

London, Feb 7 (ANI): David Beckham will not have to return to LA Galaxy in March and could be confirmed as a full-time AC Milan player if his American club agrees to the fee of 10million pounds plus with the Italian giants.

Beckham currently is midway through a two-month loan to AC Milan. His strong performances in five games for the Serie A team have prompted the club to say that it would like to either extend the loan or acquire Beckham outright.

The former England captain this week voiced his own desire to remain in Italy with a club whose roster includes more international stars than all of Major League Soccer combined.

The Sun quoted sources as saying that the negotiations had speeded up after the intervention of MLS commissioner Don Garber.

And now all the haggling appears to be over the fee Milan would pay to buy Beckham out of his 5-year, 250million dollars deal in America.

AC Milan’s initial offer of 5.7million dollars is below Galaxy’s valuation of 20million dollars, but the midfielder could walk for free in November 2009. (ANI)

Milan ready to offer 14 m pounds for Becks

February 3rd, 2009 by V

London, Feb.3 (ANI): Italian football club A C Milan is ready to make a 14 million pound bid to turn David Beckham’s loan from LA Galaxy into a permanent deal.

The Italian giants are already in talks with US companies to try to lure in new sponsors to supplement the player’s wages.

The Sun quoted Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, as saying: “We want to keep him so badly. Losing him would be appalling, so we will make every effort to have him here for good.”

The England midfielder will be offered the same basic salary he gets at Galaxy – around 4.5 million pounds a year.

But his overall package with Major League Soccer could prove a giant stumbling block.

When Becks agreed to join the MLS in late 2006, his contract was worth a potential 128 million pounds over five years.

The rise of the dollar against the pound has meant that has now become 175 million pounds. (ANI)

‘Royal Rajasthan on Wheels’, a new luxury train flagged off

January 12th, 2009 by V

New Delhi, Jan 12 (ANI): A luxury tourist train named ‘Royal Rajasthan on Wheels,’ a joint venture of the Indian Railways and the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC), was flagged off from here last evening.

The train was flagged off in the presence of Union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni, Union Minister of State for Railways Naranbhai J. Rathwa, Rajasthan Tourism Minister Bina Kak and other dignitaries.

“Rajasthan is known world-wide for its heritage tourism. People want such lavish train, where they can aware themselves with the culture and traditions of Rajasthan,” said Soni.

The Indian Railways and RTDC have been already operating another luxury train, the ‘Palace on Wheels’ since 1982.

“It has better facilities, food varieties, there are more restaurants and bars. It is more luxurious than the ‘Palace on Wheels’,” said Kak.

Foreign tourists, who embarked their royal journey, said that they would enjoy travelling in the luxury train.

“Well, it seems so wonderful. We will see more of India by his wonderful way of travelling in train. It is supposed to be a very-very special train,” said Ana Cock, a tourist from England.

The new luxury train, which is an advanced version of the ‘Palace on Wheels’ will follow the same itinerary that is Delhi-Japiur-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Sawai-Madhopur-Chiitogarh-Udaipur-Bharatpur-Agra-Delhi. (ANI)

Gazza fears he may have to ask his family to sell homes he gave

January 11th, 2009 by V

London, Jan 11 (ANI): Troubled football star Paul Gascoigne fears that he may have to ask his family to sell the homes he gave them.

In his heyday generous Gazza, 41, splashed out thousands of pounds on pads for dad John, mum Carol, sister Anna and brother Carl, the Daily Star reports.

But last week the ex-England ace was forced to sell properties he owns in Spain and Bulgaria to avoid being declared bankrupt.

And with his only income coming from books and appearances it is feared he could have to sell more assets.

Pals say the “worst case scenario” would be that Gazza – once worth a reported 14million pounds – would have to ask his family to help him out.

The former Spurs star doesn’t own the properties Carol, 61, John, 62, Anna, 42, and Carl, 39, live in – but he did buy them.

A friend said: “No one knows for sure how much money Paul has got. But what I can tell you is that he has spent thousands, hundreds of thousands in the last few months and years living it up.”

“He’s a generous guy and always buys the drinks when he’s out. He even gives kids money in the street. If he doesn’t stop it’s really worrying to think he could have nothing left. For him the worst-case scenario would have to say to his mum and dad that he needs money. They’d have to sell the homes he bought them to help him out,” he added.

Gazza, who has struggled to deal with booze, drugs and mental health problems in recent years, was due to appear at the High Court in London last Thursday for a bankruptcy hearing.

But HM Revenue and Customs dropped the case after his debts, estimated to be in the region of 200,000 pounds, were settled. (ANI)

Footballers, WAGs warned over carjackings

January 11th, 2009 by V

London, Jan 11 (ANI): Top footballers and their WAGs have been asked to take extra security measures after a series of carjackings.

Players from Manchester United and other Northwest clubs Police have been told to stay alert after a series of top-of-the-range cars were targeted.

The attacks took place in Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Handforth Dean, Cheshire, which are deep in ‘footballers’ wives’ territory.

In the latest attack, the fifth in less than a month, a man of 42 was punched in the mouth and dragged from his 4×4 by a gang who made off with his 25,000-pound car.

The theft occurred just yards from where Coleen Rooney, wife of England football star Wayne Rooney, regularly goes for tanning and beauty treatments in Wilmslow.

Just three days earlier, a terrified female motorist was forced to hand over her car keys after two masked men attacked her with a baseball bat while she was still in her car.

The incidents may be linked to two earlier carjackings at Handforth Dean, close to where many celebrities do their shopping, say the police.

Wilmslow police have issued fresh warnings to drivers of expensive, high-powered cars to be careful when out late at night.

“These are clearly the same people committing these crimes and we would like any witnesses or anyone who knows anything about the carjackings to come forward,” the Daily Star quoted Det Sgt Iain Madden, as saying.

“We also want motorists to do all they can to help prevent this happening by being vigilant and staying in well-lit, populated areas,” Madden added. (ANI)

Madonna, Guy Ritchie ‘extend truce to five times a year for kids’ sake’

January 11th, 2009 by V

London, January 11 (ANI: Former couple Madonna and Guy Ritchie have reportedly decided to extend their truce to five times a year for the sake of their children.

The warring pair, locked in a sour custody battle for kids, were said to have made peace during Christmas as the Queen of Pop flew down to her ex-hubby’s native England to celebrate the festive evening as a family.

And now, both the separated celebrities have allegedly nodded in favour of continuing the peace deal throughout 2009 and to meet during important days for Rocco, eight, their adopted son David, three, and Lourdes, Madonna’s 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

“When it comes down to it, they are both parents and they want to do what’s right for their children,” News of the World quoted a friend close to Guy as saying.

“Christmas was something done through gritted teeth, but it worked out in the end and was a success for the kids.

“But the children aren’t stupid, especially Lourdes who is old enough to understand what’s been going on. There was a lot of pain and nastiness last year,” he added.(ANI)

Hayden says he has nothing to fear from retirement

January 11th, 2009 by V

Melbourne, Jan 11 (ANI): Australian opener Mathew Hayden has said that he had “nothing to fear” as he made plans for an island getaway with his family after his 15-year long international cricket career has come under severe scrutiny due to lack of form.

The 37-year-old would this week embark on a vacation to Stradbroke Island with wife Kellie and their three children, and use the time to weigh up the biggest decision of his cricketing life.

“I don’t fear retirement, not at all. I think I’ve earned the opportunity to think about my future, and now I’m going to take it. If I say that’s it, that’s fine, it’s all good. The selectors haven’t given me any ultimatums. I haven’t thought about whether I have played my last innings for Australia.

“I think if you think like that, you have played your last innings,” Hayden said.

“There won’t be any hitting of cricket balls. I’ll be staying fit and healthy, but this will give me time to think about what it is I want to do,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Hayden, as saying.

Hayden was dropped on Wednesday from Australia’s one-day and Twenty20 sides, and many believe he will be jettisoned altogether when Test selectors meet next month to name the touring party to South Africa.

But speaking at his family home on Saturday, a relaxed Hayden said his immediate focus would be spending time with the people that mean the most to him.

“I’m just glad to have some time out now with my family. The next week or so will be crucial. I’m getting away, we’ll definitely be heading to ‘Straddy’ (his getaway at Stradbroke Island) and getting some quality family time,” Hayden said.

“I’ll be kayaking with the kids, surfing, I’ll be doing some fishing and diving. I’ll be exploring the reef with Grace (his six-year-old daughter) and going 22km out to sea for a spot of fishing.

“There won’t be any hitting of cricket balls. I’ll be staying fit and healthy, but this will give me time to think about what it is I want to do,” Hayden said.

Hayden will play his next game for Queensland in their Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia on January 30 — his only chance to impress national selectors ahead of tours to South Africa and England.

The big-hitting Queenslander insists he has not a made a definitive call on his future and would not do so until he sought the counsel of his wife over the coming week.

Hayden also revealed he had not been given any ultimatum from the Test selection panel comprising Andrew Hilditch, David Boon, Jamie Cox and Merv Hughes. (ANI)
